[ A- ] 1UP says "Anyone who played Square Enix's surprisingly excellent TWEWY will find Devil Survivor to be a curiously familiar experience, it's true -- the two games have unusually similar premises, settings, aesthetics, and music. You'd be mistaken to suggest Devil Survivor is a ripoff, though. After all, it's the latest chapter of the Shin Megami Tensei series, the same franchise that brought us the Persona games, Digital Devil Saga, SMT: Nocturne, and countless other games that feature fashion disaster teens caught up in the demon realm's latest incursion into human reality...most of which take place in modern-day Tokyo. This was MegaTen's turf first; Square was just going for squatters' rights. "

[ 8.7 ] IGN Nintendo DS says "The DS has seen no shortage of role playing games, action role playing games, or strategy role playing games over the years. No, quite the contrary, as the system is starting to become the ideal place for niche gaming and 100 hour RPG classics, getting right up there with PS2 as a home for all things niche, traditional, and hardcore. Leave it to good old Atlus to give us another one with Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor. For those down with the hip Atlus offerings across all platforms, Devil Survivor is yet another game in the long-running Shin Megami Tensei (or SMT) series, while for us little ol' DS owners it feels brand new. What is Shin Megami Tensei, and should you care that it's finally made its way out of Japan and onto your DS? I encourage you to read on and find out. "

[ 9 ] GamesRadar - Reviews says "Shin Megami Tensei, the cult Japanese RPG franchise, continues its march to America, where it has been met with open arms. Though long successful on Sony consoles, it goes into fresh territory on the DS with its newest sub-series, Devil Survivor. And while this grid-based strategy RPG has many of the hallmarks of the SMT name, including the collecting of demonic Pokemon, it also has some alterations and new features that make it a great fit for the handheld giant."

Some fans call the Shin Megami Tensei games ‘Pokemon with the lights out’. Even though the SMT series predates Pokemon by quite a few years, the flow of catching, levelling up and fusing demons feels very much like the basic Pokemon grind. But what sets SMT apart from other JRPGs is its willingness to tackle mature and truly apocaly...
  • 12/07 Review – Devil Survivor @ VideoLamer
Sometimes innovation doesn’t come from wild, crazy new ideas but from the melding of old. Like combining the wheel with fire, Devil Survivor melds two of the oldest RPG battle systems and the result is a flaming tire of fun. Battles take place on a grid following the standard SRPG trope of battles taking place on grids, but when two combatan...
