The Zombies are here. Run.

Scratch that. Run and shoot.

Valve's multiplayer focused zombie-apocalypse survival game is very straight-forward. There's a group of four human survivors that have a city of very violent zombies standing between them and safety. Get through the zombies. Easy. But in this hellish world-gone-dead, a lone survivor is a survivor no more. So stay close, stay mobile, stay alive.

Left 4 Dead is a first-person shooter with 4 short campaigns which are independent of one another. The placement of weapons, health, zombie groupings, and even bosses is variable, so even though a player may be very familiar with a map layout, they may not know the "best" way to reach the goal. This is intended to ensure a zombie pandemic you can relive over and over. Lucky you!

Reviews

[ 8 ] GameDaily Reviews says "Zombies run wild in Left 4 Dead, a gory first person shooter that challenges you to survive hordes of flesh eaters. You and three other players, either human or computer controlled, explore four post apocalyptic environments where teamwork makes the difference between life and death. Armed with shotguns, assault rifles and a few med packs, you'll withstand the onslaught by healing your comrades, rescuing them and watching each other's backs."

[ 8.5 ] Gamespot says "Left 4 Dead makes both sides of the zombie apocalypse a thrill to experience, as long as you're not alone."

[ A- ] Gaming Age says "Once in a great while there comes along a game that is so fun to play with others that you will re-work your schedules and daily plans around it just to make the time. Valve had this success with another title called Counter Strike a few years back, and now they have created another game that takes all the addicting qualities of grouping and planning and tosses in a mixture of zombies and terror as icing on the cake. The game is called Left 4 Dead and if you have a PC or Xbox 360 you are in for one of the most enjoyable online multiplayer games to date. "

[ 9.2 ] IGN Xbox 360 says "Patch: Valve's onto a real winner with its latest release, Left 4 Dead. It's been a long time since a cooperative first person shooter has felt so energetic, refreshing and flat-out addictive, even within its limited scope \u2013 and my hat is off to the team."

[ Buy It ] Crispy Gamer says "A few years back, while adding bots to Counter-Strike, folks at Valve Software realized they could create wildly compelling gameplay by pitting a small group of players against a relentless horde of enemies. The setup enforced teamwork and enhanced the experience of survival. From there, it was only a few years of intensive horror movie research and game prototyping before Left 4 Dead was born."

[ 9 ] ActionTrip says "By now, I'm almost certain most of you are well-acquainted with Left 4 Dead, the zombie themed shooter from Valve Software and Turtle Rock Studios. There's not much doubt about whether you've experienced this type of setting before. Just imagine: zombies everywhere and a small group of people trying desperately to stay alive, even though the odds are obviously against them. That's right, we've all been there before. Left 4 Dead offers something different though."

We still have no idea where Half-Life 2: Episode 3 is, but we've now learned about the project that Valve worked on prior to Left 4 Dead. A flying fairy (that's Tinkerbell in the image above) is hardly the sort of subject matter you might expect a Valve project to be based aro...
  • 08/27 Valve: Left 4 Dead was almost a game about fairies (Left 4 Dead) @ GamesRadar - Features
Valve very nearly made a game about fairies... but instead made Left 4 Dead. Apparently, the game was an RPG without a story... more like an action adventure, which involved mouse-based gesturing. Presumably clapping two mice together and repeating 'I do believe in Gordon! I do believe in Gordon!" ...
